SciFinder client version will cease June 30, 2011

From the folks at SciFinder:
"Due to increasing popularity and new development of the web version of SciFinder, CAS is announcing the discontinuation of the client version of SciFinder on June 30, 2011 for all U.S. and Canadian academic institutions."

For all those people who have procrastinated to make the switch from client to web version you have until the end of June next year. For help and instructions go to, SciFinder on the Library's database page . You can also call or email Nancy Glassman, 718-430-3108.

Annual Reviews new web site and outage

Annual Review is introducing their redesigned web site on Friday, August 27th, 2010. They expect the transition to take 6 hours.

It will be inoperative from 3:00 to 9:00 PM (DST).

We have been notified that ScienceDirect will be unavailable on Saturday, August 28, 2010 for scheduled maintenance for approximately 9 hours. The down time is expected to be 7:30 AM to -4:30 PM on Saturday, August 28th.

Flashcards -- now on Exam Master Online!

A new feature has been added to the Exam Master Online system: Flashcards. You will find this feature available once you log in to your account, in the list of buttons on the left. Simply select "Flashcards" and you will find the ability to create individual flashcards and also file them into flashcard groups. The amount of flashcards you can create is unlimited. You have the ability to create, edit, and view your flashcards. There is a help file readily available to guide you through the process. You can also convert any of your study notes into a flashcard. You will see a new option at the bottom of your study note to "Make this note a flashcard".

New App for Health Hotlines

NLM’s Health Hotlines is now available as an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch (http://itunes.apple.com/app/health-hotlines/id376404746?mt=8). Health Hotlines is also compatible with the iPad.

Health Hotlines is a compilation of organizations with toll-free telephone numbers to assist the public in locating health-related information. It is derived from DIRLINE, NLM’s Directory of Information Resources Online, which contains descriptions of almost 9,000 health and biomedical organizations and resources. Some of the subject areas included in Health Hotlines are AIDS, cancer, diseases and disorders, maternal and child health, aging, substance abuse, disabilities and mental health.

WISER iPhone App

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) from the National Library of Medicine is now available for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices (and is compatible with iPad).

This release includes WISER's full database of chemical, biological, and radiological substances.

WISER for BlackBerry is coming soon.

E-books are great. Everyone loves the convenience of having library books available 24/7 from any computer with an Internet connection. The Library’s collection includes over 8,800 e-books.

There are times when it is desirable to have the print. As part of the Library’s subscription to SpringerLink, you can order a printed copy of any SpringerLink e-book in the Library’s collection. The price is just $24.95 per book (black-and-white, softcover) including shipping and handling. The retail price for many of these titles can cost as much as $400.

SciFinder is now available on the Web! While previously this was only available as a desktop client, now you can log on through the Library's Web Site at http://libcat.aecom.yu.edu .

EndNote Tech Tip

You can download full-text journal articles (from the Library's subscriptions) directly into your EndNote database.

Follow these simple steps:
  1. In EndNote go to Edit > Preferences
  2. Select Find Full Text from the Preferences list
  3. Make sure the following items are checked:
    • ISI Web of Knowledge Full Text Links
    • DOI (Digital Object Identifier)
    • PubMed LinkOut (U.S. National Library of Medicine)
    • OpenURL
  4. Paste the following URL into the OpenURL box:

Natural Standard

Natural Standard provides evidence-based, peer-reviewed information to aid clinicians in making decisions about complementary and alternative therapies. The database contains comprehensive monographs on thousands of foods, herbs and supplements. Patient handouts are included. Natural Standard also provides comparative information on the effectiveness of therapies for various symptoms and diseases.

Validated rating scales evaluate the quality of available evidence. Several tools are included, such as an interactions checker and a symptom checker. Natural Standard also contains information on diets and exercise programs. References contain links to PubMed abstracts.

MD Consult Trial

The Library has begun a trial to MDConsult. The database includes 74 book titles including 23 in the basic sciences, 54 journal titles, most going back to 1995, 40 Clinics, Patient Education, Drugs, Guidelines, Images, and CME.

Oxford Scholarship Online

The Library has acquired 3 subject collections from Oxford University Press. They are Neuroscience, Psychology, Public Health & Epidemiology. We have access to 258 recently published titles. There are advanced search capabilities. Citations can be automatically exported to RefWorks, Endnote, Reference Manager and ProCite.

Einstein authors include Todd Feinberg, Victor Sidel and Steven Walkley.
