"Due to increasing popularity and new development of the web version of SciFinder, CAS is announcing the discontinuation of the client version of SciFinder on June 30, 2011 for all U.S. and Canadian academic institutions."

Flashcards -- now on Exam Master Online!

A new feature has been added to the Exam Master Online system: Flashcards. You will find this feature available once you log in to your account, in the list of buttons on the left. Simply select "Flashcards" and you will find the ability to create individual flashcards and also file them into flashcard groups. The amount of flashcards you can create is unlimited. You have the ability to create, edit, and view your flashcards. There is a help file readily available to guide you through the process. You can also convert any of your study notes into a flashcard. You will see a new option at the bottom of your study note to "Make this note a flashcard".

New App for Health Hotlines

NLM’s Health Hotlines is now available as an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch (http://itunes.apple.com/app/health-hotlines/id376404746?mt=8). Health Hotlines is also compatible with the iPad.

Health Hotlines is a compilation of organizations with toll-free telephone numbers to assist the public in locating health-related information. It is derived from DIRLINE, NLM’s Directory of Information Resources Online, which contains descriptions of almost 9,000 health and biomedical organizations and resources. Some of the subject areas included in Health Hotlines are AIDS, cancer, diseases and disorders, maternal and child health, aging, substance abuse, disabilities and mental health.

WISER iPhone App

WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) from the National Library of Medicine is now available for Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices (and is compatible with iPad).

This release includes WISER's full database of chemical, biological, and radiological substances.

Natural Standard

Natural Standard provides evidence-based, peer-reviewed information to aid clinicians in making decisions about complementary and alternative therapies. The database contains comprehensive monographs on thousands of foods, herbs and supplements. Patient handouts are included. Natural Standard also provides comparative information on the effectiveness of therapies for various symptoms and diseases.

Validated rating scales evaluate the quality of available evidence. Several tools are included, such as an interactions checker and a symptom checker. Natural Standard also contains information on diets and exercise programs. References contain links to PubMed abstracts.

Oxford Scholarship Online

The Library has acquired 3 subject collections from Oxford University Press. They are Neuroscience, Psychology, Public Health & Epidemiology. We have access to 258 recently published titles. TransFac trial

The D. Samuel Gottesman Library and Research Informatics Core (RIC) are sponsoring a trial of TransFac, a database on gene regulation and transcription factors.

Along with Proteome, which is currently available from the Library, TransFac is part of Biobase Knowledge Library (BKL). BKL allows users to make queries and to generate new information based on data from the literature.

Also available in this trial is the accompanying tool, ExPlain. To use Explain, you must create a free account on the BKL site.

While we have the trial for TransFac and ExPlain please use your Remote Access ID and password to login.

The trial will run through the middle of November 2009.

BMJ Case Reports trial

The Library has begun a trial to BMJ Case Reports that will continue until October 2009.

BMJ Case Reports is a peer-reviewed collection of cases in all disciplines. It includes common and rare conditions, and has more than 1000 articles from over 55 countries. The aim is to publish cases so that healthcare professionals and researchers can easily find clinically important information on common and rare conditions. Case reports published in other BMJ Journals will also be adapted for publication.

"The challenge of medicine is not only in managing the routine and well researched, but in recognising the strange... It is the minority of cases, that are not what they seem, that present the greatest challenge and risk."

"Case reports stimulate learning and research. As a time-honoured tradition of medicine they are capable of developing new subject areas, providing educational material and are among the most read content in journals. Case reports are very sensitive for detecting novelty which is useful in recognising new diseases as well as new side effects of drugs, both adverse and beneficial."

New Book: Medical Research for Hire

More than 75 percent of U.S. drug trials are now being outsourced to non-academic physicians. A new book, Medical Research for Hire: The Political Economy of Pharmaceutical Clinical Trials, published by Rutgers University Press, looks at the effects and implications of the new economic climate surrounding medical research. Decreasing revenue for doctors and increasing costs for patients have combined to create this major change in the way medical research is performed.. Focusing on the professional roles of those involved, as well as key research practices, Fisher assesses the risks and advantages for physicians and patients in this new environment.

Dr. Fisher is Assistant Professor in the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society at Vanderbilt University. This is a case-oriented approach to mental health ethics consisting of questions and answers that draw on 16 experts' personal experience in the care of people with mental illness, mental health research, and clinical training. Scenarios are presented that pose ethical issues: some narrow, to-the-point; and others that require a more nuanced approach.

Understanding & Using Digital Object Identifiers

Digital object identifiers or DOIs are links guaranteed to remain valid even if articles move between DOI-compliant platforms such as ScienceDirect.

Regardless of the publisher or author of an online publication, the structure of a DOI link is always the same, which makes DOIs easy to use.

DOI links have the following structure: http://dx.doi.org/doi.
An example is http:dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.iheduc.2003.11.004.
A DOI entered in a Web browser must be preceded by http://dx.doi.org/.

On ScienceDirect, the DOI appears in the top left area on each article. When Elsevier-published articles are cited, Elsevier asks that their DOIs be included. Stating the DOIs may help current or future researchers find cited articles.

MedEdPORTAL 2.0

MedEdPORTAL, a Web site from the Association of American Medical Colleges that provides access to peer-reviewed educational teaching and assessment resources online, has undergone major improvements. The Web site now allows you to easily download 90 percent of the 1,300 publications available. The remaining 10 percent of publications will continue to be disseminated by MedEdPORTAL staff.

The new MedEdPORTAL Web site also features an improved search function and other enhancements. Take a look at the new site at www.aamc.org/mededportal.

AMA Manual of Style : a Guide for Authors and Editors

The library has begun a subscription to AMA Manual of Style.

The American Medical Association and Oxford University Press have teamed up to produce the 10th edition of AMA Manual of Style on the web. The web edition will include style policy changes, new policies, learning and training resources, monthly tips from JAMA/Archives editors, periodic updates, and web-only new material.

There is extensive search and browse options, including searching in context and advanced searches for sections, subsections, section and subsection headings.

An interactive conversion calculator for SI units is also included.

Immigration Explorer

Immigration Explorer, from the New York Times, is an interactive map that displays historic U.S. immigration patterns since 1880. A sliding bar allows you to focus on a specific time period (by decade), and a drop down box allows you to limit your results to a specific country of origin. You can also zoom into to view individual states and query data values by county.

The library has begun a 60 day trial to SciBX: Science-Business eXchange. It is a weekly publication with concise and understandable analysis of the scientific content and commercial value of the most important translational research papers from the life science literature.

SciBX is a publishing collaboration between BioCentury Publications, Inc. and Nature Publishing Group that brings together the business intelligence of BioCentury and the scientific acumen of Nature Publishing Group.

The editorial team at SciBX mines thousands of articles across the literature each week and distill the flood of information down to the 25 most important developments.

This book is the first to focus on clinical applications of genetics in psychiatry. Evolution Resources from the National Academies

The National Academies recently redesigned their Evolution Resources web site to honor Charles Darwin's 1859 publication "On the Origin of Species". In doing so, they created a number of new sections for their users.

The "Introduction" area introduces visitors to brief summaries of evolution in agriculture, industry, and medicine. The "Definitions" area offers decisive definitions of relevant evolutionary terms. The "Books and Reports" area, offers full-text reports such as "Science, Evolution, and Creationism" and "Genesis: The Scientific Quest for Life's Origins". The site is completed by a list of upcoming events.

Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology Archive

The library has acquired the electronic backfile to the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology.

The double helix, the genetic code, jumping genes, the PCR technique, the human genome project, and RNA interference ... were announced, debated and distilled at the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia.

From the very beginning the meetings set high standards. Herbert Gasser won a Nobel Prize in 1944, and other eminent participants included Kenneth Cole (nerve conduction), Donald Van Slyke (protein chemist) and Leonor Michaelis (Michaelis-Menten equation) . The 1933 meeting lasted one month. There were 29 scientists working in labs and giving talks.

The sales of the Symposia volumes were an important source of income for the Biological Laboratory, and, some 30 years later, saved what had become the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory from bankruptcy.

The HIV Molecular Immunology Database

The HIV Molecular Immunology Database is an annotated, searchable collection of HIV-1 cytotoxic and helper T-cell epitopes and antibody binding sites from the Division of AIDS, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, through an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal of this database is to provide a comprehensive listing of defined HIV epitopes.

The data included in this database are extracted from the HIV immunology literature. HIV-specific B-cell and T-cell responses are summarized and annotated. Immunological responses are divided into three sections, CTL (CD8+), T helper (CD4+), and antibody. Within these sections, defined epitopes are organized by protein and binding sites within each protein, moving from left to right through the coding regions spanning the HIV genome. Human responses to natural HIV infections are included, as well as vaccine studies in a range of animal models and human trials. Responses that are not specifically defined, such as responses to whole proteins or monoclonal antibody responses to discontinuous epitopes, are summarized at the end of each protein sub-section. Studies describing general HIV responses to the virus, but not to any specific protein, are included at the end of each section.

The Library now has a subscription to Natural Standard, an international research collaboration that aggregates and synthesizes data on complementary and alternative therapies. The information is evidence-based, consensus-based, and peer-reviewed with the aim of aiding clinicians, patients, and healthcare institutions in making more informed and safer therapeutic decisions.

Social Science Citation Index

The Library now has a subscription to Social Science Citation Index. SSCI fully indexes 1,700 of the world's leading scholarly social sciences journals covering more than 50 disciplines.

Coverage goes back to 1996. This database is a new component of our existing subscription to Web of Science, which also includes Science Citation Index.

Henry Stewart Talks : Biomedical and Life Sciences Collection

The Library has begun a trial to Henry Stewart Talks : Biomedical and Life Sciences Collection. The trial will last through June 2008.

This is a collection of over 700 seminar-style talks. They have been specially commissioned from leading scientists and are presented in a format of animated slides with synchronized narration. Drs. Chaim Putterman and Ronald Nagel have contributed talks. Dr. Putterman's talk is on autoimmunity and Dr. Nagel's talk is on protein epidemiology.

New Book Analyzes Current Tensions in American Medicine

Our Present Complaint: American Medicine, Then and Now, a new book by noted medical historian Charles E. Rosenberg, is now available in the library. Rosenberg examines fundamental questions confronting the medical community: how it thinks about itself and its moral and intellectual responsibilities and what the public's expectations are. Providing the historical background to the current situation, Rosenberg then goes to to address current issues, including those surrounding genetics, psychiatry, and complementary medicine.

CABI Global Health database trial extended

The Library's free trial of CABI Global Health has been extended through April 30, 2008.

Global Health is a bibliographic database of international public health research and practice. It includes more than a million records from 1973 to the present.

The information is taken from serials, books, conference proceedings, patents, theses and other difficult-to-obtain sources. Publications from more than 125 countries in 50 languages are abstracted, and non-English language papers are translated.

40% of the material contained in this database is unique to Global Health. Basic and more advanced searching options are available.

The Library now has access to the Foundation Directory Online courtesy of Yeshiva University.

It is one of the most comprehensive resources for private funding research. Included in the database are more than 92,000 grantmakers, 3,700 sponsoring companies and 1.3 million grants. The grant makers include private foundations, community foundations, and grantmaking public charities. There are various ways to search: grantmaker, corporation, geographic focus (state and city), fields of interest, and types of support.

NIH Public Access

On December 26, 2007, President Bush signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2007 (H.R. 2764) which directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide public access to its funded research. NIH implemented its Public Access Policy as a voluntary measure in 2005. This new mandate requires researchers funded by NIH to submit their manuscripts to PubMed Central®.
The NIH Public Access Web site provides more information about the policy.

Scientists who publish in journals that do not submit articles directly to PubMed Central must deposit their manuscripts using the NIH Manuscript Submission (NIHMS) system.

Try the Global Health Database

The Library now has a free trial of Global Health until the end of February 2008. Global Health is a bibliographic database of international public health research and practice. It includes more than a million records from 1973 to the present. The information is taken from serials, books, conference proceedings, patents, theses and other difficult-to-obtain sources. Publications from more than 125 countries in 50 languages are abstracted, and non-English language papers are translated. Reportedly 40% of the material contained in Global Health is unique to the database. Basic and more advanced searching options are available.

Electronic access goes back to 2000 for most of the titles.

Two Titles Move to Nature Publishing Group

Obesity, the journal of The Obesity Society and the American Journal of Hypertension have moved to Nature Publishing Group.

The new Obesity web site will become available during the week of January 7th, 2008.

American Journal of Hypertension is currently available at the Nature web site. AJH's editor-in-chief is Dr. Michael H. Alderman.

New subscriptions from Wiley

The library has begun electronic subscriptions to these Wiley journals: ChemBioChem, ChemMedChem, ChemPhysChem, Journal of Hospital Medicine and Movement Disorders.
In order to support these new titles we have had to cancel Journal of Experimental Zoology. If you need post-2007 articles from JEZ request them on Interlibrary Loan

We have also begun trial subscriptions to Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regeneration, Laser and Photonics Reviews, Mount Sinai Journal of Medicin e, Personality and Mental Health, Proteomics - Clinical Applications and Statistical Analysis and Data Mining.

The Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine recently changed to Wiley Publishers.

Medical students and others looking for inspiration or just good poetry should check out Body Language: Poems of the Medical Training Experience. This new library book contains poetry by medical students and physicians, chronicling their experiences of medical training and practice. The poems are divided into chapters by phase of training, such as Medical Training, First Year and Resident. Poem titles include "Haiku of Residency" and "Surgery Rotation."

New Collaborative Medical News Site

Dissect Medicine, a joint initiative of Macmillan Medical Communications and Nature Clinical Practice, is a medical news website that encourages readers to participate. Stories range from general interest articles to basic research. Users of the site may submit news items for review with subject tags and keywords. They are then ranked by the user group. The idea is for the most relevant and influential articles to become headline stories. You may read the stories without registering, but to post links to stories or to vote, you must complete the free registration.

Medical Feeds is a directory of RSS feeds for medicine and health. The site has a large number of feeds and includes those for medical professionals and consumers. They are grouped under topics that include the various medical specialties as well as grants and employment. There is also a listing of medical blogs and podcasts.

Biomolecular Object Network Databank (BOND)

It is the first open access resource to integrate sequence and interaction information.Users may perform cross-database searches of available sequence, interaction, complex and pathway information. BOND integrates a range of component databases including Genbank and BIND, the Biomolecular Interaction Network Database.

The Biology Image Library

The AECOM Library has a trial of the Biology Image Library through December 19, 2007. The library is a collection of images, illustrations, movies, and animations for research and education. Materials can be downloaded for non-commerical purposes, such as for use in lectures or seminars.

The trial is available to all members of the AECOM community through December 19, 2007. Registration is required.

MedEdPORTAL, provided by The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) was designed to promote collaboration and educational scholarship by facilitating the open exchange of peer-reviewed teaching resources such as tutorials, virtual patients, cases (PBL, SP, OSCE), lab manuals, assessment instruments, faculty development materials, etc. Through this site, faculty can locate information about high-quality, peer-reviewed teaching material in both the basic and clinical sciences.

Registration is FREE and you can customize your MedEdPORTAL as well as submit resources for publication. Click Login from the main menu then click New User to register. You can create a customized home page called MyMedEdPORTAL that allows you to track your submissions and discover recently published items in your area of interest. Features include Search by Keyword and Browse by Discipline. A complex search can be created via the Power Search link. Keep in mind that using numerous fields may result in a narrow search.

New Look, More Features for ClinicalTrials.gov

ClinicalTrials.gov, the National Library of Medicine's web-based registry of approximately 47,000 clinical research studies, now has a new user interface and expanded features. The new interface provides more display options, including sponsor, size and age group. Search terms are now highlighted in results. The new "Studies by Topic" and "Study Topics" features group trials by four main categories: conditions, drug interventions, sponsors and locations. The map of study locations is also enhanced, allowing viewing of the number of registered trials in regions of the world for a specific search or for all studies in the database.
